England national team midfielder Cole Palmer is heartbroken following The Three Lions’ failure to win EURO 2024.
England ended up as the tournament’s second-place finishers in the event held in Germany since June 14th.
In the final match on Sunday (7/14/2024), England lost 1-2 to Spain. Palmer had tried to help his country.
The Chelsea midfielder scored the equalizing goal to make it 1-1 in the 73rd minute. Earlier, Spain took the lead in the 47th minute through Nico Williams.
However, England eventually lost 1-2 after Mikel Oyarzabal scored for Spain in the 86th minute. “We hoped we could be champions but couldn’t do it,” Palmer said as quoted by the BBC.
“I’m heartbroken,” added the Premier League’s Best Young Player for 2023-2024. “We reached the final again, there are many positive things to take away.”
“However, we aimed to take one step further but fell short.” Cole Palmer’s disappointment might be greater because he could have contributed more to the England national team.
Unfortunately, the 22-year-old player was not a first-choice for coach Gareth Southgate.
In EURO 2024, Palmer played five times, always coming on as a substitute.
He only played for 19 minutes against Slovenia, followed by Slovakia (24 minutes), Switzerland (12), and the Netherlands (10).
Against Spain, the Best Chelsea Player of 2023-2024 only played for 20 minutes.
Palmer’s total playing time was only 85 minutes, which means not even completing one full match.
However, his contribution from the Manchester City academy graduate was significant.
In addition to scoring against Spain in the final, he also played a significant role in England’s success in reaching the EURO 2024 final.
Palmer provided the assist for the winning goal of England’s 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the semifinals, scored by Ollie Watkins in the final minutes.
The minimal playing time for Cole Palmer led the English public to criticize Southgate.
The coach was considered not maximizing a player who ended the 2023-2024 season on fire.
Since March, Palmer scored 13 goals and made 6 assists for Chelsea in 14 matches in all competitions.
However, amidst his disappointment, Palmer did not comment negatively on Southgate’s treatment towards him.
“Gareth works incredibly for us,” said the player who scored a total of 25 goals for Chelsea last season.
“We made it to consecutive finals, so that’s a positive,” he concluded.
England’s Misfortune in the EURO 2024 Final, Is Harry Kane’s Curse Real?
Harry Kane’s curse seems more real after the England national team failed to win EURO 2024.
England had to settle as runners-up due to their defeat to Spain in the final match.
Playing the pinnacle match at Olympiastadion Berlin, Sunday (7/14/2024) or Monday early morning WIB, The Three Lions were defeated 1-2 by La Furia Roja.
Two goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal prevented England from climbing onto the champion’s podium.
England could only reply once with Cole Palmer’s goal.
The leader of The Three Lions, Harry Kane, couldn’t provide sweet memories for his beloved country.
He was unable to dispel a negative myth that has been associated with him.
The label of ‘curse’ or ‘bad luck’ for Kane’s career was bestowed by Spain’s top media, Marca, ahead of the 17th edition of the European Championship final.
This label was given because Kane has been able to lift trophies before.
Both at the club and international levels, the English captain has suffered defeats in six previous finals.
With Tottenham Hotspur, Kane lost in the final matches of the English League Cup (2014-2015 and 2020-2021) as well as the Champions League (2018-2019).
The 30-year-old moved to Bayern Munich with the intention of ending his title drought.
Instead of a wide smile, Kane has yet to escape the curse.
Kane experienced another bitter defeat in the 2023 German Super Cup final.
The unlucky fate of the striker seems to have spread to the England national team.
Acting as captain of The Three Lions, Kane fell in the EURO 2020 and 2024 final matches.
By failing to bring England to victory in the latest tournament, he has yet to eradicate his misfortune.
Kane’s drought of collective titles contrasts sharply with his individual achievements.
Speaking of personal achievements, the 188-centimeter-tall man has many things to be proud of.
Kane has won three Premier League Golden Boot trophies and one from the 2018 World Cup.
Don’t forget that he also won the top scorer titles in the Champions League, Bundesliga, and the European Golden Shoe in 2023-2024.
EURO 2024 – Defeated by Spain in the Final, England Becomes the Unluckiest Team in European Cup History
England became the unluckiest team in Euro history after suffering defeat to Spain in the final of the 2024 European Cup.
England’s hope to end their 58-year title drought was dashed after losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Held at Olympiastadion, Berlin, Monday (7/15/2024) early morning WIB, England lost 1-2 to Spain.
The Three Lions were not initially favored to win.
Nevertheless, England’s struggle deserves appreciation as they frustrated Spain in this match, especially in the first half.
Several attacks by Spain through their agile wingers, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, failed to penetrate England’s penalty area.
However, England’s solid defense only held up for one half.
After the break, their defense relaxed, and Spain punished them with a quick goal.
Just two minutes into the second half, Nico Williams managed to break England’s net from Lamine Yamal’s pass.
After conceding, coach Gareth Southgate then made several substitutions.
The pivotal moment came when Cole Palmer was brought on to replace Kobbie Mainoo in the 70th minute.
Palmer only needed three minutes on the field to equalize for England.
Taking advantage of Jude Bellingham’s pass, Palmer then fired a shot into the bottom right corner of Spain’s goal.
However, England fell behind again after Mikel Oyarzabal scored in the 86th minute from Marc Cucurella’s cross.
